Barge Pass

2007

Galvanised mild steel
9000x110x160cms

Built with the assistance of Stuart Watson and Arek Zykin. Stuart roughed out the main structure from my design and template. Arek and I then finished it off putting in the detail and engineering.

Circle Anglia and Old Ford Housing Association commissioned this chicane for the Montieth Estate in Old Ford. It is designed to slow people down on bikes so they don't fly headlong into the canal. It depicts two barges passing each other.

As with a good deal of my work the imagery is very dense. It is a requirement of ironwork in the public realm that no gap should be bigger than 100mm (to prevent children’s heads from becoming stuck). Fortunately it comes naturally to me to work at this intensity. Ironwork has an intrinsic pattern-making idiom as it needs many small triangulating pieces to make it rigid.
